The Focused Brief Group Therapy Institute provides training, certification, consultation and assessment services for practitioners of focused brief group therapy.  It serves therapists across the world, providing a series of levels of certification that allow practitioners to move from understanding to competence and then mastery of the methods.  FBGT is used across the world, in settings as varied as university counseling centers and outpatient clinics.  It is designed to treat interpersonal distress - an underlying cause of many mental health symptoms and to achieve measurable outcomes in a brief format. As such, it has benefits for clients, therapists, and service systems. 

 

FBGT-certified practitioners will have the opportunity to move through four different levels: 

 

Level 1: Introduction (One day or two days if being translated)

Level 2: Foundations (Two days or four days if being translated)

Level 3: Advanced (1 year with training and consultation)

Level 4: Supervision (1 year with training and consultation)

A la carte trainings (e.g. group dynamics in FBGT) can contribute toward Level 3 or 4 training. 

Experiential groups: Practitioners can join a 12-week (including assessment and individualized TPS and debriefing sessions) FBGT group led by Dr. Whittingham, that will count toward Level 3 training modules

 

 

"Grandparent" clauses will be considered for those who have already taken multi-day FBGT trainings that will allow them to obtain FBGT certifcation. In these cases, checks will take place on the competencies obtained to ensure fidelity to the model.  This may include written tests or provision of deidentified video excerpts (with client permission) or case studies. Further training may be suggested/required as needed.
