The FBGT Story
"I first developed FBGT when I was a young faculty member at Wright State University. The counseling center needed more groups to enable it to better meet rising demand for services and the director asked me to revamp the group services. As a Yalom fan, I wanted to run interpersonal process groups, but since we were on a quarter system, that meant we only had ten weeks to begin, run and end a group. So I began adding components to Yalom's model that would accelerate the therapeutic work while also ensuring that group members stayed with treatment. After some initial success and many learning moments, the approach took shape. My graduate students ran research studies and I conducted multi-method analysis on each client who either dropped out early or did not make hoped-for gains. Those learnings became some of the most important FBGT innovations, turning into techniques such as: inoculation, accurate goal selection on the Quarter Turn, Debriefing, and many other strategies that personalized therapy.

Over the last decade and a half, the approach has proven successful. Several studies have shown strong outcomes, supported the mechanisms of change and proven to be effective across cultural groups and internationally. FBGT is now widely used across the USA, China and is being adopted in other countries as well. With each implementation, cultural humility has been a core tenet. Consultations remain ongoing to determine what needs adopting and what needs adapting. I look forward to seeing how the approach will develop over the next phase as newer client groups, cultures and populations are able to work with FBGT!"
